Containers (Skyrim)
Containers are objects capable of storing other objects. Containers are found throughout Skyrim and come in a variety of shapes and sizes. The storage capacity of a container is not dependent upon its size or shape and it can store nearly an unlimited number of items. However, the items initially found inside most containers are determined by the type of container.
Most containers in the game are subject to reset, that is, they clear out all the contents after a certain period of time and are reset to their initial state. Most containers reset after about a week of game time, however, examining the contents of the container causes the countdown to start over. A container could be made to never reset simply by opening it once every 5β6 days or so. Any items left in a container that has reset are lost forever.
Contents
Apothecary’s Satchel [ ]
These are small leather pouches that can be found near alchemy labs or on shelves. They typically contain alchemy ingredients.
Barrel [ ]
Barrels can be found almost everywhere. They typically contain 1β5 food items or alchemy ingredients. A variant of the standard barrel are ones that contain alcoholic beverages, such as the Black-Briar Mead. Fish barrels, another unique variant, can be found in the Riften Fishery. Some barrels are called Thief Caches, used by the Thieves Guild to hide weapons, lockpicks and other things their fellow thieves would need. Mead Barrels can be found in Cragslane Cavern and on Solstheim in the Dragonborn add-on. They have the same texture as a normal barrel and can be interacted with the same way. The only difference is that they have a bottle of Nord mead inside them.
Birds’ Nest [ ]
Birds’ Nests can be found in many different locations all across Skyrim. They are usually found between large rocks and trees, and aren’t usually seen out in the open. Some may be found in cities behind corners of buildings or on the edge of the town wall. Whiterun is one example of a town containing a nest. Occasionally, nests can be found indoorsβfor example, there are two inside Dustman’s Cairn, and one can be found on top of your homestead in the Hearthfire expansion.
Birds’ Nests can contain:
Chest [ ]
Usually the largest storage containers found and they normally contain items of higher value than other containers. Chests can vary in appearance depending on their location. As chests are the «best» containers available, the term «chest» is often used for any storage container found within a dungeon. Chests may be locked or trapped, but never both. The one exception is the locked and trapped chest inside Pinewatch, in the room with the Unusual Gem.
All chests have a generally rectangular box shape. The exception to this are Falmer chests constructed out of chaurus chitin and these have a distinct appearance but are still recognizable as a chest.
Chests can be made in the homestead with the Hearthfire DLC. Each requires 1 Sawn Log, 1 Nails, 1 Iron Fittings, 2 Hinge, and 1 Lock.
A Legend of Zelda style Chest appears at the top of «Throat of the World» or by using the Amiibo only on the Nintendo Switch edition.
Coffin [ ]
Usually found in The Hall of the Dead or tombs. They are most often empty, however the ones with contents commonly contain clothing, armor, gold, jewelry, skulls and other miscellaneous items.
Cupboard [ ]
These are found in almost all houses. They typically contain clothing items, charcoal, rolls of paper, tankards, and, in some cases, gold.
Draugr [ ]
Some dead bodies (mostly encountered in crypts and catacombs), only act as containers. A varying amount of gold can be found on them when searched. However, if you see a resting Draugr carrying a weapon, expect a fight with it. A list of such containers are:
Display Case [ ]
Not a full container per se, but can hold weapons. Items are placed into them (See below) and the glass case can be closed. They are typically found in some purchasable properties or Jarls’ residences. Objects placed inside display cases by the player can sometimes spawn outside of them, if the area is re-loaded afterwards. This is similar to how items placed by the player on tables, seats or in bowls can be found on the floor as though leaping out of their containers upon re-entering a house. If using PSVR, players can reach inside the case without unlocking it, allowing for them to grab the item without opening the case.
Display case on low tables can be made in the homestead with the Hearthfire DLC. Requires 2 Sawn Log, 4 Nails, 1 Hinge, and 1 Glass.
To place an item in a display case:
Drawers [ ]
Usually contains various clothing and armor, as well as septims and general clutter (such as charcoal).
Dresser [ ]
These are found in almost all houses. They typically contain clothing items.
Egg Sac [ ]
Egg Sacs are usually found in caves, tombs and ruins, occasionally accompanied by one, or many, Frostbite Spiders. Their eggs typically contain a random number of Spider Eggs.
End Table [ ]
These are found in almost all houses. They typically contain items of clothing, or sometimes food or gold. End Tables can only have items placed on or in them with a Physics Carry.
Knapsack [ ]
These containers are fairly rare, but can be found in almost any environment. They typically contain a range of items such as books, ingredients, jewelry, potions and gold.
These are found in some houses and shops, and occasionally at bandit camps. They typically contain alchemy ingredients, but are often empty.
These are found nearly everywhere. They typically contain 1β5 food items or ingredients.
Quite rare, but can typically be found in upper-class housing, such as Proudspire Manor. Also available during the Dark Brotherhood quest to slay the Emperor. Safes can be created in a homestead with the Hearthfire add-on.
Satchel [ ]
Strongbox [ ]
Strongboxes are used primarily for Thieves Guild missions. With the various add-ons they can also serve as:
Wardrobe [ ]
These are found in almost all houses and will typically contain clothing items. Such clothing items will pertain to either fine clothes in fine wardrobes or regular clothes in rough wardrobes.
Urn or Burial Urn [ ]
These various sized containers can be found in tombs, ruins, and other places where the dead reside. Typically contain a small amount of gold and on occasion jewelry or potions.
List of safe containers [ ]
A chest in Markarth, also used as a Burial Urn in Skyrim.
The following containers will never reset, thus they are permanently safe to store items.
Merchant chests [ ]
All merchants in Skyrim have a corresponding chest that contains their wares. This chest is a physical item much like a regular chest, however it is typically hidden (often under the floor) and inaccessible in the game world. This is to prevent players from abusing the bartering game mechanic.
Items within the chest can only be viewed or obtained via the barter menus and the chest will refresh its items every two days.
Accessible merchant chests [ ]
In Dawnstar, to the north of Iron-Breaker Mine there is an accessible merchant chest underneath a small rock overhang. This chest belongs to Ahkari. Like all merchant chests, this chest should not be accessible, but its position is bugged. The items in this chest can be freely taken without the player being charged with a crime.
Similar to Ahkari’s chest, Ma’dran’s merchant chest is available for searching. It is located outside of Markarth behind the first stone wall on the right when traveling on foot towards Kolskeggr Mine. The items within can be taken freely with no repercussions, as well.
In Whiterun, underneath the Skyforge, Eorlund Gray-Mane’s merchant chest is accessible.
In the Blue Palace, the court mage’s chest is accessible by using items such as plates, bowls or platters to go through the wall in the basement hallway. However, almost all items taken from this chest will be marked as stolen, thus can only be sold to Fences. The only way around this is to complete The Man Who Cried Wolf quest to clear the stolen tag.
Similar to the Blue Palace, there is also one accessible by items (as above) in the Ragged Flagon.
As well, using items mentioned above, Moth gro-Bagol’s chest in Understone Keep is accessible. Taking items from this chest may sometimes cause the guards to arrest the player unless done while in stealth mode with high Sneak.
All chests in the Hall of Countenance and Hall of Attainment can be looted using a plate, platter, or bowl. The chests in the Hall of Countenance can be glitched to by going through the wall between the room with the dining table and the main area on the first floor. Furthermore, the chests in the Hall of Attainment can be glitched to from under the stairwell or from the far wall of Tolfdir’s room. However, all items will have the stolen tag. Nonetheless, it is an easy way to learn the available spells, as the spell tomes are destroyed after reading.
Do Not Delete [ ]
The «Do Not Delete» chest is a scripted placeholder left in-game by developers to represent the total gold-value merchants can hold. This is the box that essentially «allows» an NPC to be a merchant. It does not contain anything, the only reason it exists is to allow the merchants to sell their items.
It isn’t known why it is a chest, rather than a line of code within the game’s programming. These are only deletable on PC. If deleted, most merchants will cease to function altogether, although it may sometimes «break» their shop menu, meaning it can be opened, but it does not work.
Do Not Delete chests can be stacked in the air in a manner similar to the paintbrushes of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion.
What is this strange «Do Not Delete» object? And does it have a use?
Arcadia, the alchemist in Solitude sold me this:
Is this an actual item or a bug?

In TES games the store works by having a chest under the floor, it’s why you can pickpocket money you invested back without taking it actually from the shop. If taken it may break the shop and crash the game when you ask to see [the merchant’s items].
Do not take it! I saw another post on this and the explanation was it is a glitch. Something about how it is actually the chest the game used to store the shop’s loot (usually hidden). Taking it is supposedly a game breaker.
This is because their on-person inventory does not correlate with their shop inventory, apparently it gets added to both.
Superduper game breaking spoiler about console commands: tcl inside a shop’s cell, there’s always a chest with the shops inventory under the floor you can take from. That’s how Bethesda makes shops work and why pickpocketing the gold back does not effect the shop. Obviously world-event shops don’t work this way. IIRC it was like this in Oblivion as well. ALSO: when it says Do Not Delete, do not. take that chest. Badbadbadbad.
The Do Not Delete usually appears as a chest outside the bounds of the normal map in numerous shops across Skyrim. There are actually four different types of the item in the game, and based on their editor IDs, they may have something to do with the Thieves Guild.
They do not have any physics applied to them which means that they will simply float wherever dropped.
This item is occasionally sold by merchants, but it appears that it shouldn’t be. If the player buys one, it is recommended that they reload from before buying it, or if not, at least sell it back to the merchant they got it from.
Do Not Delete is a treasure chest, involved in a bug.
Explanation
«Do Not Delete» is a scripted placeholder left in-game by developers to represent the total gold-value merchants can hold. Its presence explains why gold can be pickpocketed from merchants, without their total gold value depleting.
Function
It appears as a tiny version of a wooden chest. It has no base value or any notable uses and a weight of 0.5. It is possible to come across it while clearing dungeons. It can be dropped or placed into a chest for safe keeping and appears as stolen when kept safe in a normal chest. It cannot be bought back after 24 hours in game time. It can also be used to reach otherwise inaccessible places in the game, as it floats in place when dropped.
When placed, the rotation of the player is related to how the chest is placed. Looking parallel to the entrance of the room usually results in a completely level box. However, looking perpendicular to the entrance can place the box on its side.
The stolen tag can be removed by placing it in an empty chest, then instructing a follower search the chest.
«Do Not Delete» chests can only stack in groups of 11. Once a twelfth chest is picked up, it begins a new stack.

Do Not Delete Chest survives.
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
PlayStation 3
I know the UESP recommends not buying/keeping it, but has anyone had a negative experience with one? There are many times I could have used a jumping platform. I mean, what’s it gonna do, make my game run poorly? Little late for that. π
Yeah I saw that in Arcadia’s cauldron, wtf is it? Just assumed something bad would happen if I brought it.
Also I sometimes get a game hang when entering/exiting Arcadia’s or Angeline’s aromatics. What’s that all about?
Over 1000 hours and this was my first time seeing or even hearing about it. Here’s the UESP link on it, though there’s not much. The Wiki similarly talks about it, but still, not much.
I intend to use it a floating platform to gain higher vantage points around the Skyrim world. Already had some fun with it in Whiterun hopping from it to multiple rooftops.
So, has anyone had a bad experience, corrupted save, etc after obtaining the Do Not Delete item; or did everyone just avoid it altogether? Thanks!
I think that the game messes up if it gets deleted (usually preventing you from using the merchant you bought it from to continue to be a merchant).
It can be deleted by placing it in a container that respawns, or selling it for over 2 days.

If that’s the case, then why would I want to delete it? Sounds like keeping it in my inventory would be the thing to do, unless I misunderstood?
Don’t delete the Do Not Delete box.
You can store it in your inventory, or in a chest that you know doesn’t respawn.
